Frequently Asked Questions About Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)

Before any surgery, it’s normal to have questions. Here are some of the most common questions patients ask about rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, along with simple answers to help you understand.

  • Does rhinoplasty only change the shape of the nose?
No, rhinoplasty can change both the shape of your nose and improve how you breathe. During the same surgery, issues with the nasal septum and turbinates can be fixed if needed.

  • Will there be bandages on my nose after surgery?
Yes, we usually place an external bandage after cosmetic nose surgery. This bandage stays on for about 10 to 12 days.

  • Will there be a visible scar?
No, the surgical technique we use is called closed rhinoplasty. This means all incisions are made inside the nostrils, so there are no visible scars on the outside of the nose.

  • Is there an age limit for having rhinoplasty?
Yes, rhinoplasty is generally done when the nose has fully developed, usually around 15 or 16 years old. In special cases, like correcting a cleft lip, surgery can be done earlier.

  • Do I need to stop taking my blood pressure or thyroid medications before surgery?
It’s very important to tell your surgeon about all the medicines you’re taking. The doctor will advise you on which medications to continue or stop before and after surgery.

  • Are there any medicines I should avoid before surgery?
Yes, medicines that contain aspirin (like Aspirin, Alka-Seltzer), certain vitamins, and herbal supplements can increase bleeding during surgery. It’s recommended to stop taking these 10 to 15 days before the operation. Also, if you smoke, you may need to stop up to 3 months before surgery.

  • When can I go back to work after rhinoplasty?
You can usually return to work after 6 or 7 days. If your job involves heavy physical activity, it’s best to wait 15 to 20 days. Exercise can usually be resumed after 3 to 4 weeks, depending on how you heal.

  • Will I have bruises after surgery?
Some patients may have bruises, depending on their skin type. If bruising happens, it usually goes away within one or two weeks. Avoiding certain medicines before surgery can help reduce bruising and swelling.

  • Will I have trouble breathing after the surgery?
You might feel some stuffiness in your nose temporarily. This is normal and will gradually improve as the swelling inside and outside your nose goes down.
